James Dulany Blackwell of Richmond died Friday, February 20, 2004 after a brief illness at the age of 88. He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Karl S. Blackwell; his mother, Mary Ball Blackwell; and brother, John Davenport Blackwell. He is survived by his wife, Bettye Brehm Blackwell; his children, James D. Blackwell Jr. and wife, Susan, Elizabeth Brehm Blackwell, Duncan Powell Blackwell; and his stepson, Lee Scott Hoehne and wife, Betsy; one grandchild, Clair Duvall Blackwell; his sister, Ellen Lee Meigs; and many nieces and nephews. He attended St. Catherine's School (one of Miss Jenny's boys), St. Christopher's School and the University of Virginia. He served in the Army during WW II and was stationed in the Aleutians Islands, Alaska. Following the war, he started a 32-year career with Miller & Rhodes Department Store. He was a lifetime member of Grace and Holy Trinity Church, where he served as a member of the vestry and was instrumental in founding the Grace and Holy Trinity Child Care Center. He served on the board of the YMCA and was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati. Services will be held Monday, February 23 at 3 p.m., Grace and Holy Trinity Church, 8 N. Laurel St. Burial Hollywood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Grace and Holy Trinity Church Endowment Fund or the charity of your choice.
