Daughter of:
Jacob Sammons and Chloe Dutton

Died from small pox. Martha and Emma Jane were the first deaths in the county and the village of Cheboygan. Source: Cheboygan Democrat, Friday, May 13, 1921, Page 3. Also in the book titled, " When Main Street Was A Path Among The Stumps" Cheboygan County History Series, Page 19-22.

Researcher's Note: In the book listed above, there is a lengthy but great story written by her brother, Charles Sammons that states in part that Charles was the youngest of 11 children and that Sarah was the oldest girl. Martha and Jane followed her. They died here when they were small girls from the black smallpox. The first child to be born after they died was a girl so Father and Mother named her Martha Jane. She was the first white child to be born in Cheboygan. She is dead now. She grew up, married had children of her own, and died in Grand Haven. I moved my two sisters from the family burying ground to Pine Hill Cemetery."
