David P. Fleck, 61, New Leipzig, died Oct. 16, 2009, at Jacobson Memorial Hospital, Elgin. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, at St. Anthony Catholic Church with the Rev. Chad Gion as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery.

Dave was born Sept. 15, 1948, to Peter Fleck and Elizabeth Yantzer in Bismarck. He attended rural elementary school and two years at St. Anthony Boarding School. He went on to graduate from Flasher High School. After high school, he went to veterinary school to learn about pregnancy testing for cattle.

On Oct. 11, 1969, Dave married Diane Charvat in Mandan. After their marriage, they were dairy farmers.

On Jan. 30, 2004, he married Lori Zeller Brackel in Las Vegas. Dave had done many things in his life, including owning a crop spraying business, selling advertising for Ag Week Magazine and selling John Deere tractors for Dittus Inc. Recently, he had been working as a welder for Stelter Repair in New Leipzig.

Dave was socially outgoing and enjoyed visiting with his many friends, commonly knowing people wherever he went. With his great sense of humor, David had a list of many jokes that he told. He would play practical jokes on family and friends; for him April Fool's was every day.

John Deere was Dave's choice brand of farm equipment. A highlight for him was helping people find farm machinery, his extensive memory for details he could easily recall where a particular piece of machinery was located. His special skills in math allowed him to calculate without writing or using a calculator.

When Dave had free time, he enjoyed playing cards, especially pinochle with family or on the computer. He enjoyed dancing and was an avid Twins fan. His love of animals was evident in the way he took in stray cats and made them his pets.

Dave will be missed by his wife, Lori, New Leipzig; his daughter, Shawn (Troy) Steiner, Corvallis, Ore.; his sons, Bryan (friend Joe), Minneapolis, Dustin (Carla), Mandan, and Joshua (Monica), Madison, Wis.; his stepson, Derek Brackel, Elgin; his stepdaughters, Shasta (Kevin) Van Matre, Bismarck, and Ashley Brackel, Elgin; his mother, Elizabeth, Mandan; his grandchildren, Spencer and Abigail Steiner, and Warren and Katherine Fleck, and a grandchild on the way; his sisters, Lu (Robert Leingang) Fleck, Vickie (Ron) Schaaf, Delores (Mark) Karabensch and Jennifer (Randy) Kuntz, all of Mandan; his brothers, Leslie (Joyce) and Nick (Marcia), both of Solen, Dale (Kathy), Bismarck, Alan (Candace), Peter (friend Donna Rae) and Francis, all of Mandan. He is also survived by a special friend, Steve Schmidt.

Dave was preceded in death by his father, Peter; his grandparents; his infant sister, Vivian; his infant brother, George; and his nephew, Cranston Fleck.
