Mrs. Sarah Brown Taken by Death
Honored Woman Was Past 83 Years of Age
Was Resident of Iowa Cine 1855--31 Years in Waterloo
Failing to rally from an injury sustained in a fall several weeks ago, Mrs. Sarah Phillips Brown died last night at 10:50 o'clock, at her home, 427 Tenth street west. Mrs. Brown was past four score years of age and had been a resident of Waterloo nearly 31 years. On the night of Sept. 19 last, she and her husband, George Brown were en rout to Armour S.D., to visit their son, Dr. C.A. Brown, and it was decided to spend the night at a hotel in Sioux City, to avoid the continuous journey. When ready to retire, Mrs. Brown in some manner tripped and fell to the floor, fracturing a hip. She was brought home, but at her advanced age the fracture refused to unite and the aged lady gradually wasted away.
While it was known that death only a matter of weeks or days after the accident, the news that dissolution has taken place will be received with profound regret by an extensive circle of friends. Since she was a young lady 23 years of age, Mrs. Brown had been a member of the Baptist church and during her residence in Waterloo, while her strength lasted, she was especially active in the First Baptist congregation. She fulfilled every obligation of life in splendid manner and she will be missed.
Native of Pennsylvania
Sarah Phillips was born in Washington county, Pa., Dec. 20, 1827, and she was married in that state, in Butler county, to George Brown, April 3, 1849. The family came to Iowa in 1855, locating at Iowa city, where they resided until 1859, in the spring of which year a home was established in Tama county. Thirty-one years ago next March, Mr. and Mrs. Brown came to Waterloo, and this city has since been their home.
The surviving children are Mrs. A. H. Pinkerton of Waterloo, Mrs. Ida M. Nichols of Long Beach, Cal.; Dr. C.A. Brown of Armour, S.D., and Edward J. Brown of Portland Ore. Mr. Brown survives and is comparatively well and hearty at the age of 82 years.
When Mother's Day was celebrated on May 14 last in the First Baptist church, Mrs. Brown was present and took a keen interest in the services.
Announcement of funeral arrangements is withheld, awaiting the arrival of the son fro Armour, S.D., but unless unforeseen circumstances prevent, the services will be conducted Sunday and burial will be in Elmwood cemetery.
