Private, Company F, 7th US Cavalry. Killed in action during the Battle of the Little Big Horn, Montana.

Born in Clarion County, Pennsylvania, he enlisted in Pittsburgh, on 4 October 1875, giving his previous occupation as Painter. He had gray eyes, light hair, a fair complexion, and was 5 feet 5 inches tall, and was illiterate. Various spellings of his last name exist on official records. He was killed on Last Stand Hill, along with all of the soldiers of Custer's Column, and was initially buried where he fell. In 1878, the bodies of the soldiers were removed from their field burials and reinterred in a mass grave at the top of Last Stand Hill, where his body remains today. He was not married.
