Edward served as a Private during the Civil War with a New Jersey Infantry Unit.

The title "Captain" is due to him being the Captain of a Schooner which more than likely he sailed from Odessa which was a grain port during that time.

Capt. Brooks was a "Hotel Keeper" in Saint George's hundred, New Castle County, Delaware at the time of his death.
