San Francisco Mayor. A native of Boston, Massachusetts, Sanderson moved to California in 1850 and settled in Stockton where he became a grocer. In 1865 he moved to San Francisco where he co-founded the grocery store of Root & Sanderson. After serving two terms as President of the San Francisco Board of Trade in the 1880's, he was elected the 22nd Mayor of San Francisco in 1891, serving until his retirement due to ill health in 1893. He succumbed to illness one month after leaving office. Originally buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery in San Francisco, he was later moved to Cypress Lawn Memorial Park following the outlawing of cemeteries within San Francisco city limits.
