Hal's birth name was Halliburton Frank Vance but as a boy he hated the name. The family story is that they are distantly related to the famous adventurer and author Richard Halliburton. Hal shortened his name at the age of 15 when he began working on the Mississippi River to help support his family.

His profession in his adult life was hydraulic elevator installation and he owned and operated Craft Elevator, Dixie Elevator and Bluff City Elevator Companies in Memphis, TN.

Like many men of his generation, he had many practical skills. He and his father built the family home on N. Holmes in Memphis.

Hal was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hike, fish and scuba dive. After he retired he and his wife, Margie, moved to Bon Secour, Alabama. He had a boat that he loved to take out into Bon Secour Bay, Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.
