James Harvey Addcox, Jr., age 92 and a native of Port Arthur, Texas passed away on September 29, 2011 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma with his family at his bedside.
He had been living in Oklahoma for the past year to be close to his only son and his wife, Jim and Anne Addcox. He kept his quick wit and retained all his faculties until the end, which was his wish.
James was born and raised at 1338 Dequeen Boulevard with his parents, James H. and Ola Duty Addcox. When he was 11 years old, he drove his father (who couldn't drive) in the new family convertible to Austin to visit his grandparents! He graduated from TJ in 1938 and went to high school reunions until just recently. In 1940 he married Fay Lumpkin. He served in WWII in the South Pacific and participated in the invasion of Pelilu. James and Fay had three children and spent most of their married life on Duff Dr. in Port Arthur. He was a member of First Christian Church for more than 65 years.
James's father spent his career working for Gulf Oil and James followed in his footsteps, working for 46 years at Gulf Oil and serving in both Port Arthur as well as foreign assignments, in the Philippines and Korea. Fay was able to accompany him to Korea and during vacations had a wonderful time touring Asia. After his retirement, they spent most of the year in their RV seeing the country and going on family fishing trips or at their second home in McAllen. Between 2005-2010, James lived in independent living at Collier House where he and Fay made many friends. He lost Fay in 2008 after 67 years of marriage. James lived a very full life and in the past few years, enjoyed recounting all the adventures he, his wife, and family had through the years. James and Fay spent many evenings dancing at the Pompano Club. James attended many Gulf Oil retiree picnics and enjoyed seeing his old friends. James especially enjoyed large family vacations on Bolivar Peninsula and Hawaii. He was also proud of the fact that his maternal great grandfather, Joseph Duty and his great uncle, George Duty, arrived in Texas as two of Stephen F. Austin's "Old 300 Settlers" who came to settle the land near Webberville, Texas.
James is predeceased by his wife, Fay; his daughter, Janet Pryor; as well as his parents and all four of his sisters.
He is survived by his son and his wife, Jim and Anne Addcox of Beaumont and most recently Bartlesville and his daughter and her husband, Diane and Clifford Moy of Austin and Janet's husband, Roger Pryor of Dallas. He had eight grandchildren, Stephen, Kyle, Hannah and Elizabeth Addcox; Stoney, John, and Tyler Pryor; and Caroline Moy; and seven great grandchildren. James was happy to have seen and held his youngest great grandson and namesake, James Stephen, born just one year ago. James also had several nephews and their wives who regularly came for visits and frequently called and sent cards. Surviving family members of his "generation" include has sister-in-law and her husband, Joy and Cliff Allen of Groves.
A visitation will be held at Levingston Funeral Home in Groves on Sunday, October 2, 20115-7pm .
Gaveside services will be held on Monday, October 3, 2011am at Pedigo Cemetery in Town Bluff Texas with the Reverend Mark Land of Beaumont Bible Church officiating.
