George was the fifth child and first son of George and Sophia Crowfoot Noakes, born 14 Feb 1849 in Missouri. He was named George Washington Noakes in honor of his father and a family named Washington that had befriended the Noakes family in England. The next year the family moved back to Iowa for a year or two and then the big trip across the plains to join grandparents in the Valley of the Great Salt Lake. The family left Kanesville, Iowa June 1852 with the Uriah Curtis Company, and arrived in Utah 1 Oct 1852.
They moved from Salt Lake to Cottonwood to Alpine, to Noakes Springs in Provo Canyon as his father operated sawmills in those areas. Then the permanent settlement on fertile farm lands of Provo River a few miles down stream from Charleston, Wasatch, Utah.
21 Feb 1870 George married Ann Winterton born 11 Sep 1849 at Nottingham, England. She is the daughter of William Hubbard Winterton and Sarah Marriott.

They lived at Charleston, Utah and are the parents of:
Sarah Ann Noakes b. 9 May 1871 d. 25 Mar 1963
Rosetta Noakes b. 29 Apr 1873 d. 26 Nov 1893
Anna Noakes b. 1 Feb 1875 d.

Ann Winterton Noakes died 26 Feb 1875 at Charleston, and is buried in the Charleston Cemetery.

George Washington Noakes married second on 14 Dec 1875 Rosina Haenni (or Haney) born 26 Dec 1857 in Switzerland daughter of Christian Haenni and Anna Forster. She died 6 Aug 1921 at Charleston, Utah.
