From California. Died at the age of 31 years, 10 months, 10 days, of paralysis from opium.

San Francisco Call, Volume 82, Number 181, 28 November 1897:

"THOMAS NOLAN DIES IN A PRISON CELL. Sad Fate of a Wayward Brother of Timothy Hopkins. Was Awaiting Trail for the Theft of a Piece of Garden Hose. Special Dispatch to The Call.

SACRAMENTO, Nov. 27,— Thomas Nolan, a morphine "fiend," who was awaiting trial for the theft of a piece of garden hose, died at about 11 o'clock this forenoon in a cell in the City Prison.

He was taken ill yesterday afternoon, and as he continued to grow worse the City Physician was called in to see him last night and again this morning. His case was to have come up in the Police Court this morning, but as Nolan was too ill to appear it was continued until Monday.

When the officials came out of the courtroom they learned of Nolan's death. Nolan was a native of Sacramento and about 40 years of age. His mother resided in Woodland. A couple of years ago he was sentenced to serve a term in the County Jail for vagrancy, but the commitment was withdrawn.

Nolan was a brother of Timothy Hopkins, the well-known railroad man of San Francisco. When Timothy Nolan was a young man working in the offices of the Southern Pacific Company Mark Hopkins took a 1iking to him and adopted him.

Timothy took the name of Hopkins and inherited much of the millionaire's wealth.

Timothy Hopkins sent his brother, Thomas Nolan, to a sanitarium for treatment for the morphine habit, but when he was discharged be returned to the old life."
