Christina Johns Hempstead was his stepmother. See NY census records up to 1892 on his father's memorial for the name of his mother, Catharine "Kate" Hempstead, b. ca 1829 Ireland.

The 1905 NY State Census shows "Jay" Hempstead and his sister Edna living in their parents' home in German Flats township, Mohawk Village, Herkimer Co., NY. Their parents had died just a couple of months prior to this census. Jay is 24 and Edna is 18. Jay is working as a bartender ("bar keeper") and Edna is in school.

Jeremiah is living with his sister Edna in the "ole homestead" in German Flats Township, Mohawk, Herkimer Co., NY on the 1910 U.S. Census. Both are single. Jeremiah is listed as being 29 years old and Edna is 23.

The 1920 U.S. Census for Herkimer Co., New York finds Jeremiah (Jerry) Hempstead living with his sister Edna and her family. She is now married to Charles B. Reynolds and the family is living in Mohawk. It is possible that the Reynolds were living in Edna's parents' old home. He was also living with the Reynolds at the time of the 1915 NY State Census for German Flatts, Herkimer Co., NY.

Jerry married Pearl. Pearl as b. 28 Dec. 1897, NY. She d. June 1969, Otsego, New York.

1940 U.S. Census for Binghamton, Binghamton City, Broome Co., New York:
Gerald Hempstead M 52 New York
wife Pearl Hempstead F 42 yrs, b. 1898 New York
dau Madeline Hempstead F 22 yrs, b. 1918 New York

They lived in the same home in 1935. They resided at 19 North St. At this time, Jerry worked as a "night watchman". Madeline worked as an "assembler" at a "camera works", probably a factory. It is possible that Madeline is Pearl's daughter from a previous marriage. Madeline appears to be born in 1918 and Jerry was living with his sister Edna Reynolds in 1920. No marriage record has been found for Jerry & Pearl.

Note: Jerry's birth year changes from year to year. Since he was 1 yr old in the 1880 census, 1879 seems to be the correct birth year.

The family story is that Jerry was cremated and his ashes placed in his father's grave plot.
