Evangeline Mercy Faulkner "Eva" Canning, a resident of Baton Rouge and retired administrative assistant at Ethyl Corp. for many years, died at Southside Gardens Assisted Living on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011, at 9:30 a.m.

She graduated from high school in Grand Forks, N.D., and from a business college in Chicago. She loved cooking, music, especially playing the piano, and travel. She was 91, born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and immigrated to the U.S. at age 5 with her family. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband of 70 years, L. Winston Canning; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ed and Mary Canning, of Zachary, and Dr. Harold and Pat Canning, of Baton Rouge; two grandsons and their wives, Mark and Julie Canning, of Portland, Ore., and Matthew and Kassie Canning, of Zachary; a sister, Florence Viola Sholin; and a brother and sister-in-law, Wesley and Pat Faulkner, all from St. Petersburg, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Edwin Faulkner and Florence Young Faulkner, both of whom were career Salvation Army officers; and brother, Bruce William Faulkner.
