Private, Company E, 7th US Cavalry. Killed in action during the Battle of the Little Big Horn, Montana.

He enlisted on 18 December 1874, at the age of 22, in Cincinnati, Ohio, giving his previous occupation as Farmer. He had brown eyes, brown hair, dark complexion, and was 5 feet 8 ½ inches tall. He was killed on Last Stand Hill, along with all of the soldiers of Custer's Column, and was initially buried where he fell. In 1878, the bodies of the soldiers were removed from their field burials and reinterred in a mass grave at the top of Last Stand Hill, where his body remains today. He was not married.

Family reasearch by Richard L. Smallwood-Roberts suggests that his cousin was one of those actually killed in the deep ravine, along the east side of Last Stand Hill, where several soldiers took shelter and were soon killed. Bubba Bill was reportedly quite popular with the troop, and when Reno's column eventually arrived two days after the battle, one of the men that knew him well suggested that he was one of the bodies found in the deep ravine below last stand hill, based on his physical description. Of course, they were already in an advanced state of decomposition, but the account cited suggested highly that he was one of the last men killed.
