Cesare Bartolomeo, known as Chet, was born on Feb. 23, 1890 in Collecorvino, Italy and was the 8th of nine children of Davide and Maria Lucia (nee Leone) Calandra. Chet moved to Collecorvino with his mother and family after his father died in April 1893 where he probably lived until he came to America on July 28, 1911 & became a U.S. citizen in 1918.
He enlisted in the draft for WWI on June 5, 1917 in Altoona and was living at 2206 Alley.
Chet was 22 when he married Genoveffa DiCamillo on Feb. 8, 1912 in Altoona, PA where they raised six children listed above. Chet worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad as a crane operator for 46 years and retired in 1960.
They belonged to the Methodist church.
Chet founded the Italian Society in Altoona and would go there to play cards, run meetings, etc. He loved to garden and work with wood.
He was 5'10" tall with brown hair & eyes & had a mustache his whole adult life.
He and Genoveffa had been married 50 years when he passed away on Aug. 20, 1962 in the Altoona Hosital at the age of 72 from lung cancer from breathing the coal fumes on the railroad. Genoveffa passed away 20 years later on May 23, 1983 at age 93. Both are buried at Alto Reste Park in Hollidaysburg, PA.
