Medical Pioneer. Born Marie François Bichat in Thoirette, France, he was a physician and is considered the "father of histology". He was the first person to look beyond the recognizable organ systems and suggest that each part of the body was composed of various kinds of tissues. Bichat studied mathematics and physical science before settling on the study of anatomy, taking his place in the medical community doing research. Well known as a brilliant teacher, he encouraged doctors to do autopsies on deceased patients to study the physiological effects the their illnesses. In 1800, he was appointed to serve as secretary of a medical advisory board established by the French government and published books on tissues, general anatomy, and the physiological aspects of life and death. His brilliant career was cut short at the age of 31 due to an accident when he fell down a filght of stairs in Lyons, France.
