* There were several wars between the American Civil War and WW1, but the Spanish-American War (1898) was the only war which the US fought against a world power during that time. Between 1865 and 1898 the US fought several wars against the Plains Indians. And between 1898 and US entry into WW1 in 1917, the US fought the Filipino Insurrection, and it was one of eleven nations fighting in the Boxer Rebellion in 1900, and the Mexican Expedition in 1916. However, none of these were major conflicts.
