A native of Williamsburg and a resident of Athens, Tennessee for 35 years,
she was a member of the First Baptist Church of Athens. She was a true gift
of God to her family and those who knew her, was a devoted mother, and a
divine Christian. She was a dedicated teacher at Calhoun Elementary School
for 34 years, and was a graduate of Cumberland College.
A daughter of the late Thomas and Clara Walker Shelton, she was also preceded
in death by a sister, Irene Cooper and two brothers, Eugene and Bill Shelton.
Survivors include her husband, Winford W. Starnes of Athens, Tennessee; two
daughters and sons-in-law, Stephanie and Jamie Davis of Athens, Tennessee and
Suzette and Jeff Whitehead of Athens, Tennessee; one sister, Ruth Frey of
Indianapolis, Indiana; two brothers, Donald Shelton of Lexington and Tom
Shelton of Williamsburg.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 2 in the Chapel of Jerry Smith
Funeral Home with Dr. Carlos R. Peterson officiating. Burial followed in the
Cedar Grove Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Mickey Blevins, James Summers, Fred Shelton, Lee
Parkison, Daniel Tallent, David Pierce, David Tucker, and Dr. John Forgety.
Honorary pallbearers were the faculty and staff of the Calhoun Elementary
School.
