Julia Ann Jenkins was born in Jefferson or Fulton County, Illinois March 23, 1834, the daughter of John S. Jenkins and Sarah Cook - who were married in Jefferson County in 1831. This family and the families of John's brother Thomas S. Jenkins and the remaining family of their widowed mother, Ann Jenkins, were in the 1835 Illinois state census in Fulton County. Before 1840 the John Jenkins family was back in Jefferson County living adjacent to Sarah's parents, Elizabeth and Theophilus Cook. Sometime during the 1840s the family returned to Fulton County. Sarah Cook Jenkins died in 1845 and John remarried in 1850.

In 1851 the Jenkins family moved to Bremer County, Iowa, along with several other families - including that of Jeremiah Farris. In December, 1851, Julia Ann Jenkins married Joseph B. Farris, one of the sons of Jeremiah. They were married in Bremer County although the license was issued in Buchanan County because the Bremer County government had not yet been organized. In 1858 they along with most of the Farris clan moved to Linn County, Kansas. However, several of the Farris families soon returned to Iowa including that of Joseph and Julia. In 1859 they bought the quarter section of land that included the Messinger Cemetery where they are buried. They farmed that land until 1882 when they bought the John S. Jenkins farm from his estate and moved there. Most of that farm is now within the city limits of Denver, Iowa. They also acquired several plots of woodland about 2 miles NE of Denver which was later cleared and combined for farm land by two of their sons. Joseph B. Farris was partially disabled as a result of his Civil War service. He died in 1911, Julia died November 16, 1920.
