A native of VT. He was a millwright by trade, but for eight years was a sailor on the great lakes, and was a man of more than ordinary ingenuity, activity and bravery. For many years he was a captain on the lakes, and imbued his sons with a love for seamanship. In politics he was first a whig, but at the birth of the Republican party voted for John C. Fremont.
