Mr. Andrews was born on October 11, 1917, in Pender County, NC. He later moved to Wilmington, NC, with his family, where he attended William Hooper Elementary School and New Hanover High School. After graduation in 1935, he worked for the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. He joined the National Guard at age 18 and was called into active duty service in 1942.
While in the Army, Mr. Andrews served in Trinidad, the Hawaiian Islands, and the Philippines. As a Tank Commander for the 96th Division during World War II, he participated in the invasions at Leyte and Okinawa, for which he received the Bronze Star medal in 1945. He left active service in 1946, after attaining the rank of Captain.
After leaving the military, Mr. Andrews moved to Washington, DC, to attend college at George Washington and Southeastern Universities on the G.I. Bill, taking night and weekend classes while working as a tour guide and clerk at the FBI Headquarters. He met his future wife, the former Mary Ann Phillips of Lake Providence, LA, who was working for the Department of the Navy, while in Washington and they married on December 18, 1948. After graduating from college in June of 1949, Mr. Andrews became a Special Agent for the FBI.
Mr. Andrews spent most of his career as an FBI Special Agent stationed in Buffalo, NY, where his two daughters were born. He was transferred to the Charlotte, NC FBI office in 1966 and retired from the FBI in 1974, after 28 years of service. In 2001, Mr. Andrews moved to Durham, NC, where he lived with his wife of 62 years until his death.
Mr. Andrews is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; his daughters, Lynn Alice Andrews (Paul Kauffmann) and Jane Andrews Wallace (Roger Wallace); his sister, Jeannine Andrews Smith (Bill Smith); his brother, James Lawrence Andrews; his grandchildren, Sabrena Ann Kauffmann, Crystal Noelle McBrayer, Michael Andrews Kauffmann, Kathryn Andrews Kauffmann; his great-grandchildren, Christopher Wayne Haworth, Greenlee Noelle McBrayer and Leland June McBrayer; and his nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at Topsail Presbyterian Church in Hampstead, NC at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, October 1, 2011, with a graveside service to follow at 12:00 noon at Greenlawn Cemetery on Shipyard Lane in Wilmington, NC.
