Russell was a son of German immigrant Valentine Ahlbrand and Carrie (Eiber) Ahlbrand of Columbus, OH. After serving in WW I he came to Greene County where he was in Inspector for the Air Depot at Fairfield, OH (now Wright-Patterson AFB).
His son, Russell Ahlbrand Junior served in WW II and was assigned to Los Alamos. The famous 'mushroom cloud' photo of the first nuclear test was taken by him.
