Catholina Lambert was born in England the son of mill workers. When he was 17 he left for America to seek his fortune. He found a job as an accountant with a textile firm in Boston and within three years he became a partner and then the owner of that firm. In 1857 he married Isabelle Shattuck and they made a home in New York - the business center of the textile industry.

In 1859 they visited the thriving textile city of Paterson, New Jersey and purchased a mill on Straight Street and land on Garret Mountain. In a short time they called Paterson their home and thirty-three years later (1892) Lambert would build his “Belle-Vista” castle on the land they purchased on Garret Mountain. In his castle he would display one of the world’s finest art collections. Paintings by Rembrant, Luini and Renior filled the massive grand art hall and gallery.

Over the decades Lambert’s business had thrived bringing immense wealth. But in the thirteen years between 1870 and 1883 the Lambert’s lost six of their eight children and the twentieth century would bring hard personal and financial times. In 1901 Lambert lost his wife Isabella, in 1906 his last daughter and in 1913 the Great Silk Strike would create a financial crisis that would force Lambert to sell his multi-million dollar art collection for $500,000.

Lambert lived in his castle until his death in 1923.
