North Carolina Governor. Graduating from the University of North Carolina, in 1840, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and established a legal career in Morganton, North Carolina. He was the solicitor of Burke County, a member of the North Carolina House of Commons, (1842-45, 48-49, 58-59) and served in the North Carolina State Senate, (1850-51). He was elected the first Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina in 1868 and assumed the duties of the governorship when Governor William W. Holden was impeached, in 1870. In 1871, he was elected as a Republican the 41st Governor of North Carolina, serving until his death from cholera morbus at age 56. While he was in office, financing was secured for the reopening of the state’s public schools, state spending was controlled and the state deficit was reduced.
