Joseph Flagg, the story goes, died of fright just before his wedding day. In his youth he dreamed of his death on a certain day and when that day came he died even though he seemed in perfect health. On a trip to see his intended a day before the wedding, his horse detoured to the Church Yard Cemetery and couldn't be coaxed away from the grave of Joseph's Father. The frightened Joseph returned home inflammed with fever and died soon after.

Since the stone's inscription says "Erected by Miss Sally Eastman to the memory of Mr. Joseph Flagg", the assumption can be made that Miss Sally Eastman was his intended bride.
