David Blakely, a farmer, married Mary Ann Blackman, from Gilbertsville, New York. Mary Ann and David lived on a farm near Otsego, NY until 1855 when they moved to Neenah Wisconsin.

1850 census for Otsego, Otsego, New York, shows David, 36, farmer, value of real estate $1400, place of birth NY; Mary A, 26; Josiah B, 4; Clarence R, 2.

1860 census for Neenah, Wisconsin, shows the Blakely family with five children. Josiah, 14; Clarence, 12; Mary, 9; Clement,7; and Harriet, 3. The three older children are identified as born in New York, with Harriet born in Wisconsin.

David certainly knew sorrow in his life. Daughter Harriet/Hattie died 24 Aug 1864, age 7. Three years later, 12 Jan 1867, wife Mary Ann died, age 44. On 22 June 1872, son Clement drowned in Jones Lake, Montrose, Pennsylvania, while visiting his Blackman grandparents.

1870 census for Neenah, Wisconsin shows David with wife Sarah M (surname unknown). Sarah died March 10, 1877.

1880 census shows David living alone, with a housekeeper. That same year his son Josiah and family returned from missionary work in China and settled on an adjacent farm.

His five children are:
