John H. Stevens

1919 ~ 2011

John Hamilton Stevens, 91, of Omak, WA, died July 17, 2011, after a two-month battle with cancer, in Omak. His children were by his side. One of eight children, John was born to Elmer H. and Charlotte Isebelle Stevens in Conway on August 18, 1919. His father was a farmer and his mother a teacher. His grandparents, Edgar Harrison and Ida Adell Stevens, homesteaded on Marlstone Island, WA. On July 27, 1941, in Wooster, AR, John married Mary Geraldine Fuller, who died September 18, 1971. On August 22, 1972, in Port Orchard, WA, he married Ina Marie Markham, who died June 8, 2005. John joined the National Guard in 1935, and enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1940. He was commissioned as an Army Air Force Pilot in 1944. In World War II, he flew 28 combat missions with the 8th Air Force, 94th Bomb Group, as a B-17 pilot. He retired from the Air Force Reserves at the rank of Major in 1960. In 1946, he moved with his family to Port Orchard, WA, where he owned and operated a sawmill with his brother, Emsley Stevens. Later, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a rural Mail Carrier, from which he retired after 30 years in 1979. He was a member of the New Fellowship Baptist Church in Riverside, WA; past member of Lake Chelan Baptist Church; the First Baptist Church in Port Orchard, WA; and Pickles Gap Baptist Church in Greenbrier, AR. A devout Christian and supporter of his church, John served as Deacon, Sunday school teacher, and chairman of numerous committees. He was known for his warm sense of humor and loving spirit. He was an avid sportsman and gardener, getting untold pleasure from giving away produce, fish and game to family, friends and neighbors.

John will forever be remembered by his children, John R. Stevens and Jo Ann Stevens; daughter-in-law, Louise Wasson Stevens; stepdaughter, Marie Markham; sister-in-law, Wanda Lindsey; and many nieces, nephews, church members and neighbors who were blessed to know him.

Friends and family are invited to attend a Memorial Service at Green Chapel, Hendrix College, 1600 Washington Avenue, Conway, AR, on October 8, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be at Pearson Cemetery in Wooster, AR. The Rev. Donald H. Stevens will officiate. Flowers may be sent to Green Chapel. Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the American Cancer Society.
