He was born in 1771 or 1772 and died at the age of approximately 54 years according to a newspaper report summarized by Arthur Kelly. Phineas was the oldest son of Mrs. Mary Mellen Gibbs, widow of Phineas Gibbs and her second husband John Freeland and the brother of my ancestor Leonard Freeland who was born about 1786. Phineas Freeland married Anna Walker at Christ Church (a Congregational church) at Hopkinton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. They ran a summer hotel at Claverack for many years and spent time in both Massachusetts and New York.

Phineas was the first son of Mrs. Mary Mellen Gibbs (who had been married first to Phineas Gibbs by whom they had a son William and three daughters) and her second husband John Freeland. He was named Phineas in honor of Phineas Gibbs and had the surname of Freeland from the second husband. This was not unusual at the time whenever a male or female spouse died without a living namesake child of their own.

Many thanks to Jacki at Weymouth Massachusetts for giving me some more information on Phineas which was sometimes spelled Phinehas as to date of birth.
