Anna was the daughter of Ole Paulsen (Poulsen) and Johanna Osen and was born in Norway. When Johanna was five years old, the family emigrated from Norway and made their way to Ludington, Michigan.

On December 23, 1902, when she was 25, Anna married Franz "Frank" Herman Arndt. They became the parents of Clarence Martin, Florence Mae and Benjamin Franklin "Benny" Arndt and they lived in Amber Township, Michigan.

In 1910, Anna was only 32 and tragedy struck this little family hard. On January 11, Frank passed away from consumption (tuberculosis) at the age of 32. Anna never remarried.

On May 5, 1910, when Anna was still struggling to cope with the death of her husband, their little son Benny's life was claimed by whooping cough that was complicated by bronchitis just before he was to turn 2 years old.

Then on November 22, 1910, Frank's mother, Amelia, passed away.

After the death of her husband, Anna moved to Ludington and the 1910 Census shows Anna and the three children living with her parents, Ole and Johanna Paulsen.

There very well could have been family strife between Anna and her parents, because by 1920, when she was 42, the census shows Anna living alone and 15-year-old Clarence living with his aunt, Minnie Andersen and her children. Florence is only 14 years old and is in the census as a border in the home of George and Emma Danielson on Brother Street. Brother Street intersects Staffon Street where Anna was living. What happened to fragment this little family so badly??? (The birthplace of Anna and her parents is Norway, but the 1920 Census lists all as having been born in Michigan. This is an error.)

By 1930, when Anna is 52, her daughter Florence is shown in the census to be married to Homer McKee and they have two small children. Anna is living in their home.

The 1940 Census shows Anna at 62 years old and living in the home of James and Marian Angle on E. Ludington Avenue and working as their housekeeper. It also says that she had lived there since at least 1935. I would hope this was because people must work and not because there was difficulty between Anna and her daughter.

In October of 1949, the Ludington Daily News heralded a large birthday celebration for Anna to observe her 72nd birthday and it was attended by 44 of her relatives.

In June of 1960, at the age of 82, Anna passed away in Paulina Stearns Hospital after being ill for about two years. She had been living at 803 E. Loomis Street for many years.

Her funeral was held on June 25th at Bethany Methodist Church where she had been an active member for many years. Anna is buried in Lakeview Cemetery in Ludington where her headstone reads simply "Mother" Anna Arndt 1877-1960.

On June 22, 1963, the following appeared in the Ludington Daily News "In Memoriam" section:
