He first married Rosella Jane Miles on 12 February 1867 in Marion, Lynn County, Iowa.

He later became the husband of Hattie Torinda Corbin. They had 5 children: Norris, Victor, Addie, Bessie and Mabel (born Sept 1890).

In the 1870 census for Aurora, Kane County, Illinois, Rosella Gray (age 22, born Ohio) and Anna Gray (age 1, born Iowa) were living with Lester Gray, Diantha, Ann, Wells and Wright.

In the 1880 census for Jennerson, Greene County, Iowa, Rocella J. Gray has children Anna B (age 11), Wallace M. (age 6), Lura (age 4) and Authur (age 2), all born in Iowa. She is listed as married, but her husband is not listed in the household.
