The second of five children born to James Peter GARDNER Sr. (born Chicago IL) and Catherine Rose GABRIEL (born Shelby OH) (h&w). Leo was born at home in the town of Shelby, Richland County, Ohio.

Leo was the GRANDSON of John Joseph GABRIEL (1850-1926) and Magdalena M. ZEIDLER (1852-1936), who emigrated from Bohemia--John Joseph from Wilkischen and Magadalena M. from Meschowitz. They met in Ohio and married at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Plymouth, Richland County, Ohio, Nov 04 1874.

Leo was the GREAT-GRANDSON of John GABRIEL and Margaret BAUMOEL (h&w) and also the GREAT-GRANDSON of Joseph ZEIDLER and Cathrian MACH (h&w)--none of these four GREAT-GRANDPARENTS ever immigrated into America.

Leo graduated from Lakewood High School, Lakewood, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, January 1933. His extra-curriculum activities included Football 2, 3, 4; "L" (Latin) Club 4; Track 3, 4.

Leo, 1564 Highland Avenue, Lakewood, Ohio, married Evelyn UGAN, 1619 Hopkins Avenue, Lakewood, Ohio, the daughter of Andrew UGYAN (1886-1918) and Elizabeth E. SHEPOS (1894-1993) (h&w) with Rev. P. J. O'CONNELL/Rev. P. G. McNALLY, Detroit Avenue, officiating November 28 1935.

City Directory (Lakewood/Rocky River) 1949 lists Leo as a manager at United Aluminum Castings. Cleveland Plain Dealer 09/13/1947: Company has "outgrown a modest beginning of two years ago. [It] has moved to 3471 West 140 Street. The firm, headed by Leo J GARDNER has increased in capacity from 40,000 pounds to 300,000 pounds per month."

Leo was pilot and owner of a turbo-prop plane and enjoyed taking family and friends on aerial tours of nearby counties.

Leo is survived by his mother Catherine, wife Evelyn, and four children: Maureen Elizabeth (b1941), Loretta Jane (b1942), Thomas John (b1945), and David (b1947) of the family home. Leo is also survived by his three brothers: Lawrence, James, and Henry. He is predeceased by his newborn sister Mary Catherine and his father James Peter Sr.

Funeral Mass St. Angela Merci Catholic Church, Fairview Park, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. During the Mass, the song selected by family: "You'll Never Walk Alone" (written by Rodgers & Hammerstein 1945 for their musical Carousel) was sung by parish vocalist accompanied by parish organist. CORRIGAN BROTHERS Funeral Home, Lorain Avenue at W. 208th Street, Fairview Park, Ohio was in charge of services.
