Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. He was gazetted for the award on December 24, 1858 for his actions as a lieutenant in the 53rd Regiment of Foot (later The King's Shropshire Light Infantry) of the British Army on November 16, 1857 at Lucknow, India during the 1857 Indian Rebellion. He was born in Meerit, British India and died at the age of 37 in Chiswich, London, England after becoming ill while serving as a captain in Bermuda. His Victoria Cross citation reads: "For conspicuous bravery on the 16th of November, 1857, at the taking of the Secundra Bagh, Lucknow, when in command of the Grenadier Company, being one of the first to enter the building, being afterwards elected by his brother officers for the distinction." His Victoria Cross is on display at The King's Shropshire Light Infantry Museum in Shrewsbury Castle, Shropshire, England. A memorial was erected in his honor at St. Chad's Church in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England.
