TV and movie actor for an astounding 35 years. His unique and iconic "Mr. Peppermint" character enthralled children and their parents during the 1960's (1961-1969)& beyond. He led the longest running locally-produced show in WFAA's (D/FW channel 8) history with more than 6,000 episodes. After an absence, the TV show returned as "Peppermint Place" (1975-1996) until ending in 1996.

Haynes was also an accomplished character actor who appeared in more than 50 motion pictures, including "Places in the Heart," "Robo Cop" and "Boys Don't Cry." He starred in a variety of TV movies and shows as well, among them: "Dallas" and "Walker, Texas Ranger."

Haynes began his career as a program announcer, then hosted variety and teen dance shows in the 1950s, including "Dallas Bandstand." He also filled in for the legendary Dick Clark on his "American Bandstand" network program.

One of his many passions was theatre. Suffering from complications due to Parkinson's Disease, he passed away in Longview, Texas at age 84.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years Doris Gibson Haynes; his children, daughter Carla & her husband Jack Mann (Longview), son Gibson & his wife Melissa (Brooklyn, NY), son Andrew & his partner John Brattin (New York, NY); & as "PeePaw" to his grandchildren; Andrea & her husband, Jason Doornbos, Molly & her husband Kyle Hughes, Matthew, Curtis, Satchel & great-granddaughter Sidney Doornbos. He is also survived by his sister, Dr. Mary Hayden, & numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louise Schimelpfenig & Fred Haynes, & his brothers, Maj. Gen. Fred Haynes, Dr. William Haynes & Hal Haynes.
