A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 3, 1999, in Bethlehem Lutheran Church for Mollie Starkel, who died Aug. 30 at age 97. Mrs. Starkel was born Sept. 20, 1901, in Schwab, Russia. Her maiden name was Schwab. She immigrated to New York in 1904, was raised in Enid, Okla., and lived in Norfolk and Lincoln, Neb., before moving to Portland in 1946. She was a homemaker and a cook for Kaiser-Permanente for about 10 years before her retirement in 1967. She was a member of the church and a volunteer with Loaves & Fishes. In 1922, she married Andrew H.; he died in 1984. Survivors include her daughters, Ilene M. Tamlyn of Milwaukie and Ruth A. Speer of Portland; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Her daughter Mary Lou Malowney died in 1994, and her daughter Frances Starkel died in 1997. Interment will be in Sunset Hills Memorial Park. The family suggests remembrances to the memorial fund of her church. Arrangements are by Ross Hollywood Chapel. (The Oregonian, 02 Sep 1999)
