Disaster Victims. On January 10, 1860, the Pemberton Mill in Lawrence, Massachusetts, suddenly collapsed, trapping 900 workers in the rubble. During the rescue attempt, a lantern being used by one of the rescuers began a fire, killing some of those who were trapped but who had survived the collapse. Most of the 88 victims were women, recent immigrants from Ireland. It was determined that the collapse was caused by inferior cast-iron support pillars, a sample of which can be seen on display at the Lawrence Heritage State Park Visitors' Center. This stone was erected for the grave of the dead left unrecognizable by the disaster.
