Pianist. Noted as both a performer and teacher, she shall be remembered as an interpreter of the works of her country's greatest pianist, Frederic Chopin. Raised in northern Poland, she began piano lessons at four, studied at the Krakow Music Academy, made her recital debut in 1947 with the Krakow Philharmonic, and in 1949 won a medal at the Frederic Chopin International Competition. After further training with Zbigniew Drzewiecki, Regina began an international career that was to take her throughout Europe as well as to England, the United States, and Japan; primarily known for playing the music of Chopin, she frequently programed the works of lesser known Polish composers as well. Regina taught from 1964 until 1968 in Krakow and from 1966 to 1996 was professor at Warsaw's Frederic Chopin Academy, in the process training roughly 70 top level pianists and authoring a respected text on Chopin interpretation. She was on several occasions a judge at the Chopin Competition, received six awards from the Polish Minister of Culture and Arts, has a star on the Torun Walk-of-Fame, and in 2002 was granted an honorary doctorate by the Frederic Chopin Academy. At her death following a protracted illness much of her recorded legacy on Deutsche Grammophone, RCA, and other labels remained available.
