"Raymond H. Piotrowski was born in Terryville, CT on August 13th 1918. He attended school in Terryville and graduated high school in 1936. He entered the Army in August of 1941 and was with the Field Artillery until his appointment as an air cadet. He won his wings and commission at the San Marcos School of Navigation, Texas in June 1943. He was a navigator on a B24 Liberator bomber and had been stationed in England about six months before the trip on which he was killed. Lt. Piotrowski was killed in action on a mission over enemy territory on March 13th 1944. He was awarded the Purple Heart, "for wounds received in action resulting in his death". He was also awarded the Air Medal and Oak Leaf Cluster. The citation reads: "For exceptionally meritorious achievement, while participating in ten separate bomber mission over enemy occupied Continental Europe. The courage, coolness and skill displayed by this officer upon these occasions reflect great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States." He took part in the first big daylight bombings of Berlin, raids on Bremen, Kiel and other objectives in occupied territory."
