Raised in Montana and later Minnesota, he attended the University of Washington and following graduation became the proprietor of a farm. Redlin initiated his political career as a member of North Dakota's State Senate (1959 to 1963 and 1973 to 2000). During his tenure as a senator, he was a proponent for once-a-year sessions.
