Crimean War Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Celbridge, County Kildare, Ireland, he served as a Lieutenant in the 49th Regiment of Foot, British Army. On October 26, 1854, Lieutenant Conolly was in command of a post at Sebastopol, Creima, When the Russians attacked the post, they fell back pursued by men led by Lieutenant Conolly. During the action, Lieutenant Conolly fell dangerously wounded while in personal contact with several Russians, defending his post. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross on May 5, 1857. He later gained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Coldstream Guards Regiment. He died at age 59 in Curragh, Ireland.
