He made his United States debut in Boston in "Under the Gaslight" in 1875. He married the actress Georgiana Drew, daughter of actors John and Louisa Lane Drew in 1876, and together they formed their own road company. They were the parents of stage and film actors Lionel, Ethel, and John Barrymore.
