Born to Alice and Lucius Hunnewell in Keene, N.H., on Oct. 8, 1917, she came to Thomaston as a young girl, graduating from Thomaston High School in 1937. While a young woman, she spent many happy summers in Spofford, N.H., and kept ties there her whole life. She was married to Gosta Anselm Osterman from 1937 to 1954 and raised her family in Thomaston. In 1969 she moved to Northfield, where she was a good steward to the old house and land at 46 Newton Road, a place she came to consider her true home. In 1997, her eyesight failing, she returned to Thomaston, residing at Grove Manor the remainder of her life.

She worked for several years as secretary to the headmaster of Taft School and then as executive secretary to the owners of Whyco Chromium Co. in Thomaston. In the 1950s she began her own business as an independent Realtor. A member of the Litchfield County Board of Realtors, she served on its Grievance Committee and then as committee chair for its Board of Professional Standards. She was known for her integrity and high business standards. She enjoyed her memberships and personal associations in the Beacon Grange in Northfield, serving as its treasurer for several years, the Northfield Women's Literary Club and the Northfield Historical Society. She was a member of St. Peter's Trinity Church in Thomaston.

Alice leaves her daughter, Ann Osterman Cook of Manchester; her sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Carol Osterman of Litchfield and John David and Mary Lou Osterman of Thomaston; her grandchildren, Bruce Osterman Jr. of Bethlehem, Elizabeth Spear of Andover, Brian Osterman of Litchfield, Damon Osterman of Torrington, John Cook of Manchester, John David Osterman Jr. of Thomaston, Heather Robillard of Harwinton, Jennie Osterman of Torrington; and her 10 great-grandchildren.
