Captain James Bradley was born in Caswell County, North Carolina, and settled in Tennessee in 1798. He served at the siege of Charlestown, South Carolina, and at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, North Carolina, during the Revolutionary War, and in February 1812 he volunteered for service under General James Winchester. He was a signer of the Cumberland Compact.
