Drowned in Klamath River
Dr. Vernon L. Hunt, prominent orthodontist who resided in Arcata and had offices in both Arcata and Eureka, was drowned in the Klamath River Sunday evening, September 5, while on a fishing trip with Mrs. Hunt and a number of friends.

Dr. Hunt was nationally known in his work as an orthodontist, and was active in numerous organizations. These included serving in all offices of the Humboldt County District Dental Society and as councilman for 15 years from Humboldt County to the state society; delegate from the California State Dental Society to the American Dental Association; member of the California Board of Examiners the past six years; past president of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Alumni Society; consultant on the National Board of Dental Examiners; vice president of the American Association of Dental Examiners. National committees on which he served include the education committee of the American Dental Association.

Dr. Hunt had lectured and conducted clinics before the College of Physicians and Surgeons Alumni Society in San Francisco; the California State Dental Society; the Pacific Coast Orthodontic Society; the American Dental Association; the American Orthodontic Society; and the Mexican Dental Society.

He held the only two honorary degrees given in the field of dentistry, Fellow of the American Colleges of Dentists and Fellow of the International College of Dentists. Honor fraternity memberships included Tau Kappa Omega, College of Undergraduate honorary society; and Omicrom Kappa Upsilon, highest national dental honor society.

His published articles have appeared in the American Dental Association Journal, the American Weekly.

Dr. Hunt, born 61 years ago in Arcata, is survived by his wife, Eva, of Arcata; one son, Dr. Everett Hunt of Arcata; three grandchildren, Heidi, Holly and Howard of Arcata; two sisters, Mrs. Cora Taylor and Mrs. Geraldine Gianoni, both of Arcata; and the following brothers: Herbert, Vinal, and Chester, all of Arcata, Stanley Hunt of Mendocino County, and Russell Hunt of Metropolitan.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Paul’s Funeral Chapel in Arcata, with interment to follow in Greenwood Cemetery. The family has asked that memorial gifts be made to either the College of Physicians and Surgeons, 344, Fourteenth Street, San Francisco, or to Humboldt State College.
