GREENSBORO — Troy Leo Gibson of Friends Homes at Guilford died Wednesday, July 27, 2011.
He was born some four miles east of Blue Mountain, MS (Tippah County) to John A. and Mary Jo Norris Gibson and resided in Blue Mountain, MS, attending Mississippi Heights Academy, a private school for boys.
In the first 100 days after Roosevelt took office, a number of programs were passed. One of them was the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) targeted for veterans and young men ages 18-25. The CCC was known as the "Soil Soldiers" of the Roosevelt Army. The discipline and training would remain important thru out his life.
He served in Tupelo, MS building roads, parks, lakes, and worked on soil erosion. The park they built is now Elvis Presley State Park east of Tupelo. Other assignments included some in Utah and back home at Potts Camp Forest Service #9 CCC Camp 486 MS.
He enlisted in the US army March 4, 1941, in the 155th Infantry 31st division. Upon the expansion of the Army Air Corps, he received a short discharge from the ground force and enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was discharged in February, 1947.
There was a lot of travel, both while in the CCC and the armed forces which led to his interest in foreign travel as a retiree. Growing up in Mississippi guaranteed a life of hunting and fishing.
With his wife, he owned and operated a Dairy Queen and Brazier restaurant in Cedartown, GA and later, Gibson Petroleum Equipment Service in Greensboro, NC.
Troy was preceded in death by his parents, brother, James Allen Gibson and sister, Mary Alma Gibson. Survivors include his wife, Eleanor Morgan Gibson, nephews James Allen Gibson (Bonnie) of Ripley, MS, Carl Franklin Gibson (Arlene) of Lamar, MS; sister-in-law Jean Morgan Watson and her sons, Richard Watson (Brenda) and David Watson (Pamela) of Cumming, GA.
Troy was of the Baptist Faith and a 60 year Mason, most recently Gate City Lodge #694.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 29, 2011 at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
