"On February 2, 1849, Charles H. Oakes, a Crow Wing trader, reported to Indian agent Jonathan E. Fletcher that Bagone-giizhig [Hole in the Day II] had killed a mixed-blood named John Fairbanks Jr. (brother of trader William Fairbanks) using the Colt 45 revolver he had received as a present from President Franklin Pierce on his previous trip to Washington."
From The Assassination of Hole in the Day by Anton Treuer, page 97.

Excerpt from Old Crow Wing: History of a Village, John Humphrey, et al, Evergreen Press, page 14.
Soon William and John Fairbanks and their families came to Crow Wing to live, but their families must have left again to return to Sandy Lake in 1844. John Fairbanks' son was shot by the Indians, and the family returned to Crow Wing, where the son died in 1849. A sister, Jane, and the mother, Mary Fairbanks, a Chippewa, died of tuberculosis, and were buried in the same plot. The following inscription could be seen over thirty years ago on a tombstone in the Episcopal cemetery: "John Fairbanks, born June 28, 1842, shot by Indians, Dec. 30, 1848, Died Jan. 1, 1849."
