Clendus was always known as Otis and the name on his tombstone reads "Otis Nowlin". He was born in Miller Township, Dearborn County, IN. As a young man, Otis traveled helping with corn picking and thrashing in IN and as far west as the Dakotas. He lived most of his married life on Wash Board Road, now known as Mt. Pleasant Road, in Logan Township, Dearborn County, IN. In his latter years he owned a feed mill and lived in Bright, IN. He married Mamie Ann Grubbs on 10 Jun 1911. They had four children: Helen Fern Nowlin (m. Roy Ervin Lutz); Leonard Ernest Nowlin (m. Norma Fliehman); Nellie Maude Nowlin (died as a teenager; presumed cause of death was blood poisoning); and Norman Eugene Nowlin (m1. Mary Ruth Stremple, m2. Joyce Elaine [Cavander] Dobbins).
