Tom was the son of Thomas Calhoun Barr Sr. and Gladys Hutchison Barr and the husband of Judith Wiles Crow Barr.
Tom attended Harvard University where he graduated with an AB in Biology in 1953. He next earned an MA in Zoology from Columbia University in 1954 and a PhD in Bilogy from Vanderbilt University in 1958. Tom taught at Texas Tech from 1957 to 1958 , and at Tennessee Tech from 1958 to 1961, and finished his teaching career at the University of Kentucky from 1961 until his retirement in 1993. Tom was the author of "Caves of Tennessee" (1961)
