Dorothy Marie Conlon, daughter of John and Hazel (Wilson) Tobin, was born June 9, 1922 in Ceylon, Minnesota. She attended St. John's Catholic School in Bancroft.
In 1939 Dorothy was united in marriage to John Zylstra. To this union a son Sidney was born. John was killed in Italy during the war in 1943. On November 3, 1944 Dorothy married Joseph E. Conlon in Ayrshire.
Dorothy worked for Conlon Brothers for seventeen years from 1950 until 1967. In September 1969 she began working at the J.C. Penney store in Spencer. She retired from the store in October 1988.
Joe and Dorothy enjoyed traveling and had gone to Las Vegas and wintered in Bullhead City, Arizona for eight years. Dorothy loved fishing and also made quilts and rugs. Dorothy was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Guild in Ruthven and she was also a member of the Red Hat Society.
Dorothy died Thursday, October 6, 2005 at the Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer, Iowa at the age of 83. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Hazel; her step mother, Jessie; her first husband, John; second husband, Joseph on May 19, 2000; brothers, Donald Duane at birth and Roger Tobin.
She is survived by her son Sidney Zylstra and his wife, Karen of Emmetsburg, IA; five grandchildren, Saundra Jean Gossman of Rockford, MN, Sidney J. Zylstra, Jr. of Storm Lake, IA, Steven Zylstra and his wife, Jeanne of Milford, IA, Stuart Zylstra and his wife, Leah of Emmetsburg, IA, and Scott Zylstra of Houston, TX; seven great grandchildren, Brian Gossman, Amanda Jo Zylstra, Michelle Gossman, Andrew Zylstra, James Gossman, Ashley Zylstra and Keri Zylstra; sisters, Pat Schnell of Ruthven, IA, Priscilla Zaugg of Emmetsburg, IA, and Kathleen Tobin of Rockford, IL; brothers, Jim Tobin of Veribest, TX and John Tobin of Grand Island, NE.
