Civil War Confederate Army Officer. Graduating from the University of Virginia in 1842, he was admitted to the Virginia bar and practiced law in Richmond until the start of the Civil War. Entering the Confederate Army as a Captain, he eventually rose to the rank of Colonel in the First Virginia Artillery. His battalion saw action at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Salem Church, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania Court House, and Appomattox Station. Following the Civil War, he returned to the practice of law in Richmond and served as director of the Central Railroad, the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, and the James River Canal Company. He was the son of William Henry Cabell, Governor of Virginia.
