Peter was the middle of three sons of Dr. Henry Connelly and his first wife (possibly named Zelinza). His father had settled in Chihuahua and ran a successful mercantile business. However sometime after the birth and death of the youngest child, Thomas, war with the United States was threatening, and so Henry packed up his surviving sons, Joseph and Peter, and sent them in 1846 with an acquaintance to Missouri, where the two young boys appear on the 1850 Census in Blue, Jackson County (Adam and Ann M Hill family, page 280-A, family 689).

Peter attended school at the Masonic College* in Lexington, Missouri from 1853 to about 1859 according to his own account which he gave to an author writing about his father*, but he appears as a student in the John F and Gabriella Ryland household in Lexington, Lafayette County, on the 1870 Census (page 355; family 103). He moved to New Mexico sometime after finishing school and served as a clerk of the Territorial Supreme Court* in the 1860s and also was registered as an insurance agent living in 1868 in Santa Fe (where his father was buried in 1866). He married Cornelia Davey on 4 May 1868, but in Jefferson County, Kentucky, instead of either New Mexico or Missouri.

*Per War with Mexico, 1846-1847: Doniphan's Expedition and the Conquest of New Mexico and California by William Elsey Connelley, c. 1907.

Peter and Cornelia's oldest child, Henry Wood Connelly, was born in 1869 in Wyandotte County, Kansas, and the family appear there on the 1870 Census in the city of Wyandotte (Ward 2, page 629-B, family 345). Peter at this time was working as a banker, a profession he followed most of his life. He was apparently, like his father, successful in business as his land was listed at a value of $10,000. The three Connellys again appear on the 1875 Kansas State Census, where Peter's profession is noted as a contractor who had come to Kansas from New Mexico. His real estate value had tripled in only 5 years to a value of $30,000. Unfortunately, a daughter, Clarita, had been born and died prior to this census.

By the 1880 Census, a widowed Peter, bank clerk, was living across the border in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri, with his son Henry (pages 399-A & B, family 286). Peter's 3-year-old daughter, Mary Gertrude, was living with her late mother's sister and brother-in-law, Allen and Elizabeth Overton, in Pleasant Hill, Cass County, Missouri (p 149-B, family 178).

On 17 May 1886, Peter married again to Miss Alice Doran. With Alice, he had another daughter, Judith Wakefield Connelly in March 1887. When Judith was only 9, her mother contracted pneumonia, dying on 19 March 1898. Henry W. had married in 1897, and so Peter appears with only his daughters, Gertrude and Judith, (and a boarder) on the 1900 Census again in Kansas City (Ward 8, page 1-B, family 235).

When she came of age, Judith joined the convent (Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary) and became a teacher at St Mary's College and Academy (later named Marygrove College) in Michigan. Gertrude, however, remained single, living with her father until his death. The two appear together, still in Kansas City, on the 1910 Census (Ward 12, page 4-B, family 88), the 1920 Census (Ward 7, page 1-B, family 22),and the 1930 Census (Ward 11, page 7-A, family 125). Peter, at age 69 on the 1910 Census, had already retired. He died in his home at the age 91 of myocarditis, a heart infection, on 28 January 1933.

Of those who lived to adulthood, Peter's children had no descendants. His son Henry married but had no children. Gertrude never married, and Judith became a nun. Thus, Peter's branch of the Connelly family ended with his children.
